In today’s world, there are many different ways that people around the globe
face a lot of stress. Learners, educators, and the communities they live in all deal
with issues like academic pressure, work load and time commitment expectations,
rapid social change, and a general lack of support system in terms of emotional help.
Therefore, this paper will look at how education can be used to manage stress and
promote mental wellness. This paper will discuss what educational institutions can
do to foster an individual's ability to be resilient, regulate their emotions effectively,
and develop effective coping mechanisms when dealing with stressful situations.
This research was conducted using a conceptual/analytical approach, using existing
research and studies about stress, wellness, and educational practices. Particular
attention is being given to those that may be considered vulnerable populations (i.e.,
migrant students) that have to deal with additional stressors while adjusting to a
new culture including language barriers, acculturation stressor, etc. Additionally,
the author believes it is important to highlight the potential that educators possess in
developing a supportive and inclusive learning environment by engaging with their
local community to raise awareness about mental health issues. As indicated above,
the results indicate that incorporating life skill instruction into educational
programs or curricula; implementing social/emotional learning activities and
instruction to assist learners in regulating their emotions during stressful times; and
providing mental health resources to support learners both emotionally and
cognitively can significantly impact the reduction of learner stress. Furthermore,
implementing instructional practices that provide counsellors for learners to seek
assistance from; developing peer support systems where learners can share
experiences and support one another; and utilizing inclusive teaching methods
which take into account diverse backgrounds and cultures of learners can also
positively affect the well-being of learners.
