Abstract

In contemporary educational settings, stress among students has emerged as a
significant barrier to learning and overall well-being, particularly in rural and
resource-constrained contexts. This paper explores the evolving role of teachers in
managing classroom and student stress by synthesizing insights from recent empirical
studies and the conceptual framework presented in the seminar brochure on “The
Role of Education in Promoting Stress Management and Mental Well-being.” A
review of leading research indicates that teacher stress, classroom environment, and
teacher–student relationships are critical determinants of student mental health
outcomes. Teachers are no longer confined to the role of knowledge transmitters but
are increasingly recognized as frontline facilitators of emotional support and stress
regulation. Studies reveal that positive classroom climates, participative teaching
styles, and strong interpersonal relationships significantly reduce student anxiety and
enhance engagement. Furthermore, in rural areas where access to professional
mental health services is limited, teachers act as primary agents of psychological
support and community awareness. However, the dual burden of managing their own
stress alongside student needs highlights the necessity for institutional support and
professional development. The paper concludes that empowering teachers through
training, policy support, and well-being initiatives is essential for transforming
education into a proactive tool for stress management and holistic development.
