Abstract

Academic stress has emerged as a pervasive feature of contemporary education systems, extending beyond the pursuit of grades to shape students’ psychological well-being and long-term development. This study examines the multifaceted nature of educational stressors experienced by students across school and higher education, with particular attention to the Indian context and the structural disadvantages faced by rural learners. Drawing on sociological and psychological perspectives, including the works of Deb, Strodl and Sun (2015), West and Sweeting (2003), and Apple’s notion of the hidden curriculum, the paper situates academic stress within broader institutional and socio-cultural frameworks. It further integrates classical sociological insights from Durkheim, Weber, and Bowles and Gintis to highlight how educational systems reproduce inequalities and intensify performance pressures. Special emphasis is placed on rural students in India, whose experiences are shaped by limited infrastructure, digital exclusion, linguistic barriers, and challenges in transitioning to urban educational environments, as evidenced in recent empirical studies such as Kapoor and Prakash (2024) and Sthavarmath and Patil (2021). The study also explores the critical role of educators in mitigating stress and fostering resilience through inclusive pedagogical practices, emotional support, and institutional sensitivity. By synthesising theoretical and empirical insights, the paper aims to reframe academic stress as a systemic issue rather than an individual limitation, underscoring the need for educator-driven interventions that promote equitable and resilient learning environments.
